Carpark in Sheffield by Allies & Morrison architects. a single, repeated and rotated, module is used to cloak an otherwise unassuming concrete carpark structure. the sense of movement and randomness contrasted against traditional sheffield housing creates an intriguing alien like presence.

Louise

The eminent professor Louise Wilson has presided over the Design MA at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London since 1992. [...] The professor holds her beliefs with more conviction than anyone, and she wears her ferocious reputation with pride and a sense of humour that has become the stuff of legends.

The eminent professor Louise Wilson has presided over the Design MA at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London since 1992. Based in a tatty art deco building on London’s Charing Cross Road, the school has earned a reputation as the Oxford or Cambridge of fashion design. And Louise Wilson’s name has become indistinguishable from the degree. She has instructed students such as Stefano Pilati (now at Yves Saint Laurent), Giles Deacon, Hussein Chalayan, Alexander McQueen, and more recently Christopher Kane and Jonathan Saunders. The professor holds her beliefs with more conviction than anyone, and she wears her ferocious reputation with pride and a sense of humour that has become the stuff of legends. In 2009 she was made an OBE – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – and one thing she likes to teach her pupils is how to be a proficient liar. See More

Léa

With a handful of small but perfectly placed roles, she can look back on her achievements to date with pride, knowing they are the result of hard graft rather than lucky connections.

The 24-year-old actress Léa Seydoux was never particularly keen on films while she was growing up, despite strong family ties to the cinema industry in France. But things change quickly. Over the last five years, she debuted in a teen movie, worked with the scandalous filmmaker Catherine Breillat in the erotic costume drama ‘The Last Mistress’, and was nominated for a César, the French equivalent of an Academy Award, for her role in ‘La Belle Personne’. Léa recently played the farmer’s daughter in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ and stars alongside Russell Crowe in ‘Robin Hood’. With a handful of small but perfectly placed roles, she can look back on her achievements to date with pride, knowing they are the result of hard graft rather than lucky connections. Léa was interviewed in Périgueux, where she was shooting ‘Le Roman de Ma Femme’ with director Jamshed Usmonov, the latest addition to her expanding on- and off-set family. See More

Boyd

His international career has allowed him to work with the best creative minds, and given that he looks to his mentors for inspiration, he will inevitably be adding ‘director’ to his list of achievements too. Boyd believes that all new ventures are worth the risk. He might fall flat on his ass, he says, but he’ll always stand up stronger.

It is tough coming up with a single title for 28-year-old Boyd Holbrook. As a model he was the face of Dior Homme and Viktor & Rolf ’s men’s fragrance, Antidote, and walked the runway for Dior, Burberry, Calvin Klein and many others. He’s also a sculptor, photographer, playwright and actor. He studied cinematography and has recently been taking music lessons to bone up for his star-making role in ‘Tough Trade’, a new television series created by Chris Offutt, the man behind some of the most compelling television of today. Playing a country singer seems to suit Boyd well, with his good ol’ Kentucky background. See More

Benjamin

It cannot be a coincidence that French ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied’s surname happens to mean ‘a thousand feet’. He learnt his métier young, growing up with a coach father and dancer mother.

It cannot be a coincidence that French ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied’s surname happens to mean ‘a thousand feet’. He learnt his métier young, growing up with a coach father and dancer mother. Now, at age 32, Benjamin is a principal in the New York City Ballet, and he’s eagerly branching out to choreography, acting, and a variety of creative collaborations. Like many of the greats before him, Benjamin believes strongly in working with visual artists (Paul Cox), designers (Marc Jacobs), and musicians (Philip Glass, Nico Muhly) to bring depth to ballet, which, he says, is ‘the most limited of the arts’. Meanwhile he continues to gain attention not just for his artistic successes, but also for his increasingly visible personal life. See More

Sophie

Sophie seems to have shaken off all conventional concerns about appearance to live by a different set of rules. The foundation of her exceptional sense of style and of her architectural brilliance is her appetite for adventure.

A few years ago, architect Sophie Hicks appeared on the website ‘The Sartorialist’. She was photographed at the Frieze Art Fair wearing a tailored jacket, baggy trousers, a canvas bag slung over her shoulder, and solid black shoes peeping from her hems. Readers were immediately smitten with her androgynous appearance: ‘Sexy!!! My heart would drop if I saw her/him in the street. Obviously an advanced creature,’ proclaimed one comment. Sophie seems to have shaken off all conventional concerns about appearance to live by a different set of rules. The foundation of her exceptional sense of style and of her architectural brilliance is her appetite for adventure. In her mid twenties, one decade into a successful fashion career that she had thrown herself into whilst still a teenager, she walked away from clothing and into architecture. Now, 20 years later, she seems ready again for a change of focus. See More

Gerrit Rietveld Academy

For the better part of last year, the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam found itself engulfed in student and teacher protests that threatened to tear the school apart at the seams.

Posters proclaiming heartfelt objections were hung, signatures accumulated on a pleading online petition, and events like a human chain around the building became the new norm of daily life. The subject of the conflict was a controversial new plan to relocate the academy to an unused office block on the other side of town, leaving behind their landmark building of more than fifty years. And even though the proposal had solid backing from the school’s uppermost leadership, the persuasiveness and passion of the student response was enough to defeat it. See More
