10 days of summer holidays

A collection of things from New Zealand and australia where we went to see family and friends in June. It contains a vintage bowl from Auckland, some pebbles and shells, a photo of Milford Sound, some glue, old tickets, a gem tray and a hokey pokey ice cream sign. All of these evoke holiday memories and they are all dotted around our flat.

Franca Sozzani

Since 1988, Franca Sozzani has been the fearless editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia, the fashion bible that is seen as the most audacious of all Vogues. The magazine has several offshoots, such as the pleasantly obscure, interior periodical Casa Vogue, which is a welcome antipole to so many stale design magazines today. Franca’s older sister Carla is the founder of 10 Corso Como, the luxury department store in Milan. Together, the Sozzani sisters basically rule Italian fashion.

Carlo Antonelli: My first question isn’t about Vogue Italia but about one of its side projects that we all love dearly. How do you go about making Casa Vogue?
Franca Sozzani: You know what makes Casa Vogue good? The fact that it doesn’t have a script. I love it and I love making it. We just do what feels right. There is no big Casa Vogue plan. The idea behind it is simple: it is what homes tell us about their owners, not about their architects. You live in your home in the same way you wear your clothes. Personally, I wouldn’t even allow an architect to design the tiles in my bathroom – it would drive me mad. You have to do your own thing, choose the things you personally like. I would never hire an architect to design my house, in the same way that I would never wear clothes that are recognisably from one particular designer. I don’t like wearing somebody else’s style. The great thing about Casa Vogue is that we have no restrictions. And I’m not talking about commercial restrictions in terms of advertising: I mean even in terms of the concept. If we decide we like trashy homes, or shabby homes, or something else, we’ll make it happen. Its lack of structure is a way of life. See More

The Dining Room

Interior 1

Valeria Napoleone,
Art collector
Kensington, London
UK

Every collector must find his or her own balance between art and life, and Italian-born, London-based Valeria Napoleone approaches that bargain with particular brio. “I like large pieces that invade the room, but I don’t buy things that I couldn’t instal at home and enjoy. I would never buy a work to keep in storage,” she says. Home for Valeria is an apartment in an Arts & Crafts house built in 1868 by the renowned architect Phillip Webb. When it was converted into apartments in the 1950s, much of Webb ’s interiors was stripped away, but Valeria’s raised ground-floor living and dining rooms retain beautiful structural reminders of their 19th-century origins. “I am very conscious of these ceilings and walls,” she says, gesturing to the ornate corners. “But of course they’re fantastic. It’s not about limitation; it’s about the interesting compromise of putting art in a domestic environment.” See More

Interior 2

Jen Causey,
Photographer and blogger
Brooklyn, New York
US

Jen Causey is mildly obsessed with all things breakfast. For the past three years the 30-something resident of Brooklyn has maintained a blog – simply called Simply Breakfast – on which she photographically documents her breakfast routine. Although in Jen’s case the word ‘routine’ is hardly appropriate, as she rarely ever cooks up the same thing twice: French toast, omelets, muesli, muffins, frittatas, pastries, yoghurt, fruit, waffles, and even soup or a leftover slice of pizza – they have all been featured in her blog, leaving a steaming cup of black coffee as one of the few constants in her almost daily posts (truth be told, she prefers her coffee with cream and no sugar, but black coffee photographs better). Todd Selby

The photographs that Todd Selby takes in the homes of friends and people he admires offer an interesting glimpse into contemporary households. His website, theselby.com, takes visitors on a world tour of personal spaces and reveals a genuine curiosity about how his peers arrange their lives, and how they organise their shoes or the perfume bottles on their bathroom shelf. Todd just published The Selby Is in Your Place, a quirky collection of his favourite interiors.

Gert Jonkers: Could you give us a few pointers on how to take a good photo of an interior?
Todd Selby: Well, I keep it very simple and I work very light. I go by myself and I have just a digital SLR camera. No tripod. Occasionally I’ll use some extra lighting that I bring along, but I always try to shoot with existing light.

But do you take your time? Your photos don’t look snapshotty.
I’m very fast. The whole process of photographing somebody’s house takes two, maybe two-and-a-half hours in total. Including three or four outfit changes. I ask the people to change their outfits because it’s boring to see someone wearing the same clothes throughout the story. And also you get to see a bit of their personal style of dressing, which I think is an interesting extra element. See More

The Studio

Interior 3

Martino Gamper,
Designer
Hackney, London
UK

Martino Gamper’s studio on Tudor Road in Hackney, East London, is a special, in-between kind of place. After taking over the lease from friends a few years back, he began to convert it into a home for himself. Then, just as he got down to stripping out the bathroom, he met the love of his life, the artist Francis Upritchard. Co-habitation at hers was soon followed by marriage, and a space that was originally intended to be domestic evolved into something else. See More

Labour and Wait

Ten years ago, Simon Watkins and Rachel Wythe-Moran quit their corporate jobs to create Labour and Wait, a homeware store that started a quiet revolution in the world of interiors. From a tiny shop in East London, the pair focus on the importance of the product itself, finding the inherent beauty in dustpans, brushes, and other functional essentials. As a shop, Labour and Wait is a must-visit. As a way of living, the clever simplicity of Simon and Rachel’s ethic is a lesson to all.

It’s a Thursday, and the Labour and Wait store on Cheshire Street in East London is closed; it only trades on weekends. Simon Watkins and Rachel Wythe-Moran are sitting in the basement – a windowless office that also serves as their stockroom. It’s a bustle of paperwork and there is no staff to help. Simon is sat at the room’s only desk, Rachel is on a stool next to some shelving and I’m perched on a milk crate between them. Surrounding us are some of the products with which they have quietly shifted the aesthetic of the home in the past decade: traditional teapots, navy workman’s jackets, balls of string. See More

The Garden Shed

Interior 4

Simon Foxton,
Stylish
West Ealing, London
UK

Acclaimed stylist and fashion consultant Simon Foxton can often be found in the world’s more glamorous corners. He’s a regular contributor to magazines such as Fantastic Man and i-D, and is much sought after for the nuanced improvements he brings to certain brands as well as to certain celebrities’ wardrobes, so London, Los Angeles, New York and Milan are his working habitat. But when he is home, Simon can most often be found in the shed at the bottom of his garden in West Ealing, London. See More

Ellie Goulding

With her debut album going straight to number 1 in the UK charts, 23-year-old pop star Ellie Goulding is fabulously successful and no stranger to the gossip pages of the British press. But while her peers may be snapped stumbling out of bars and nightclubs, Ellie is more likely to be found at the gym.

Three months after her first big hit, Starry Eyed, Ellie Goulding walks into the lobby of Universal Records, the music monolith on Kensington High Street in West London. The doorman doesn’t recognise her – “I only pay attention when Boyzone come in,” he says with a leer – but the paparazzi do. It’s only 10:30 in the morning, but Ellie’s already been ‘papped’, and she doesn’t like it one bit. “It makes me feel a bit sick,” says Ellie. “It started the other day because I said that I’m writing songs for Cheryl Cole. I came out of GMTV yesterday and they just all followed me home. Luckily I’m moving out soon.” See More

The Art Space

Interior 5

Chert,
Art Gallery
Kreuzberg, Berlin
DE

The established architecture of galleries seems to be the proverbial white cube: immaculate white walls, indirect light, recessed fixtures and all reminders of the everyday carefully hidden from view. Such meticulous perfection has its price, and younger galleries with tighter budgets and more youthful élan often eschew the cliché white-on-white for a more site-specific look. Case in point: Chert gallery in Berlin, located in a former car repair shop in the city’s Kreuzberg area. Chert’s owner and director, Italian-born Jennifer Chert, chose to keep authentic features such as the auto hoist platform and its tiled wall. See More
